Allan Babbitt - Photographs
Alan Babbitt creates one-of-a-kind images with an offbeat, quirky view of the world and a dry sense of humor. He was born with poor eyesight, only partially correctable (Don't let him drive your car). Whether from ignorance, stubbornness or over compensation, he has blindly refused to face the facts. Instead, he has specialized in visuals his whole life.
As a boy, in the late 1950’s, he was given his 1st camera – a Kodak Brownie Hawkeye – and has been a photographer ever since. Along the way, he’s had successful careers as a Film-Videomaker, and as a Website Designer - to support his photography habit. In 2003, Alan was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease, which came with a nasty hand tremor. Not exactly a desirable trait for a photographer. But in his recent "Tremor Enhanced" work, Alan has turned his "handicap" into an innovative art technique. "The last couple years have been the most creative and productive of my life," Alan says, "and it all flows from the empowering realization that I could use the shakiness. The damn tremor was a gift!"
Building on that work, he continues to expand and explore the idea of motion within a still image – an approach he calls "Un-Still Photography".
Alan is also creating another distinctive body of work in The Photo Blendo Series. Here he explores the notions of symmetry, synthesis and serendipity – turning photography into eye-catching and sometimes, otherworldly digital art.
He is also beginning to create original images made up of pieces from several photographs joined together to form new, surreal compositions – most notably “Hippo at the End of The Tunnel” and “Dreaming of a Dream Within a Dream.” Both of these plus prints from Alan’s Un-Still Photography, Photo Blendo Series and his more traditional Cityscapes are on display at CMCM during November and December.
