Bernard Healey - Paintings
Bernard Healey is a long time Marin County resident who loves the coast and the natural land and water that make Marin a paradise. Most of his painting career has been focused on landscapes and waterscapes in acrylic paints on canvas. He favors heavy brush strokes and impasto combined with delicate washes, giving vigor and movement to his cloud formations and mist arising from the wetlands. The California coast has always provided an endless source of inspiration for his paintings.
After studying at the San Francisco Art Institute and other Bay Area art schools, he chose to forego the rigid academic approach and developed his own style. His personal inquiry into space, color, and light has helped him express the mood and sweeping power of local scenery rather than to simply illustrate it. Bernard Healey's award winning works have been exhibited in may solo and juried shows throughout California. His work is in collections across the United States and in Europe.
Though Bernard Healey considers his painting style to be plein air, he is most often found in his studio painting from loose impressions of local scenes, memories gathered from many forays in the area and photographs taken on site. These "washy" personal interpretations have made his work more about the mood of the landscape than the place itself. Also, familiarity with local beaches inspires the creation of wood assemblages from found objects. These intarsias are now in many private collections and galleries.
Art studies at the San Francisco Art Institute in the late forties influenced much of his abstract and impressionist work.
