REORIENT: home is where?
A multimedia performance and exhibition on identity and its intersection with place and ethnicity by Sheri Park
Born in California to a white American mother and a 3rd generation Korean American father, Sheri Park struggled to understand her racial and ethnic identity, particularly after living abroad as a child. Caught not only between cultures but between her parent's diametric perspectives on race and identity, Park considers her family’s stories and catechizes her own conflicting perspectives on belonging and Americanness. Religion is lightly woven throughout her family history as an impetus to move and a marker of generational change; spirituality, then, becomes another layer of her self-understanding and self-questioning. The end result is a multimedia performance and exhibition on identity and its intersection with place and ethnicity, and how our history, and other’s perceptions, shape our sense of self and belonging.
